Modernist Delights

Photographer bait, Lancaster, 2025

Leaving a wee kids’ bike in front of a decaying warehouse on an industrial estate just as the sun sets behind it, to me, is like the proverbial van full of sweets. After deviating from my route back from the gym to take a photo, I’m surprised I’m not in some basement with my face on a milk carton right now.

A small purple and white child’s bicycle stands alone in front of a large, old stone industrial building with a blue metal roller door. The concrete yard is empty except for scattered debris and a puddle near the street in the foreground.

Avenue Methodist Church, Sale, 2025

A brick church with a large cross on the wall, labeled “Avenue Methodist Church” in blue letters. Tall windows line the front, and a tree in the foreground casts shadows on the green lawn, dotted with daffodils. The sun shines through the branches.

Large church window with rectangular panes in a geometric pattern. Leafless tree branches are visible through the glass. Modern pendant lights shaped like teardrops hang from the ceiling. On the left wall, a banner reads I AM THE LIGHT with Christian symbols.

A brown brick building with large, white-framed, geometric windows on the upper floor sits under a clear blue sky. A white sign reading “Disabled Parking Only” is mounted on the brick wall near the bottom center of the image.

An empty church sanctuary with wooden pews, a raised altar with flowers, two lecterns with Christian symbols, and a large wooden cross mounted on a geometric panel. Tall windows and modern light fixtures hang from the high, peach-colored ceiling.

Fire exit in a celestial shaft of light, Sale, 2025

A metal staircase leads to a door on the first floor of a red-brick building. Pipes and vents are attached to the wall. Below the stairs, metal sheets and debris are stacked. A blue sky with a contrail is visible above the building.

Tesco supermarket in Sale, 2025

A street scene outside a Tesco supermarket. Three London taxis are parked along the curb, including a pink cab with advertising. The building has a modern façade with vertical white slats. Blue sky is visible above, and a tree without leaves stands on the left.

A round, white, multi-storey car park ramp with horizontal slats, seen on a sunny day. Signs show a 20 mph speed limit and John St. A yellow bin sits by the kerb. Sunlight shines brightly behind the building, casting shadows.

A brick building with vertical white bars covering an outdoor stairwell. A sign reads “TESCO Stairs to Car park” with a blue arrow pointing up. Leafless shrubs and a tree are in the foreground; a blue sky is visible above.

Squint and pretend you can’t see the uPVC!

A three-story brick apartment building with white accents and a central entrance. There are multiple windows on each floor, some with satellite dishes. A small front lawn, paved path, low brick wall, and a street sign are visible in the foreground under a clear sky.

Covered walkway in Sale, 2025

A glass-enclosed skybridge with red framing connects two brick buildings. Reflections are visible on the glass panels. In the background, a taller, modern building stands against a clear blue sky. Shadows fall on the walls below the bridge.

Modernist album art, 2025

I don’t like the music of Antony Szmierek enough to own his albums in duplicate, but how could I refuse with gorgeous album art like that? This one’s going right in my Forton Services shrine. Nosy greyhound notwithstanding.
